What Is Functional Bloodwork? A Holistic Perspective

Why Looking at the Whole Picture Can Help You Better Understand Your Health

One of the questions I hear most often is,

"If my lab work came back normal, why don't I feel well?"

It's an honest question, and one that many people ask after spending months—or even years—searching for answers.

The truth is that laboratory testing is an incredibly valuable part of healthcare. It can identify disease, monitor medical conditions, and provide important information for your healthcare team.

But there are times when someone may still feel tired, overwhelmed, experience digestive discomfort, struggle with hormone changes, or simply feel "off," even though their results fall within normal laboratory reference ranges.

This is where functional bloodwork offers a different perspective.

Functional Bloodwork Doesn't Mean Different Blood Tests

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that functional bloodwork requires a completely different set of laboratory tests.

In many cases, that's not true.

Often, functional bloodwork uses the same laboratory values your physician may already have ordered. The difference isn't necessarily the testing itself—it's how the information is reviewed.

Rather than looking at one marker by itself, I look at how different markers relate to one another, how they may fit with your health history, lifestyle, and wellness goals, and whether patterns begin to emerge that deserve further conversation.

My goal isn't to diagnose illness.

My goal is to better understand the whole person sitting in front of me.

Looking for Patterns Instead of Isolated Numbers

Our bodies rarely work in isolation.

That's why I don't believe one laboratory value tells the entire story.

Instead, I look for patterns that may help explain how different systems are working together.

For example, nutrition, stress, sleep, hydration, digestion, and lifestyle all influence the body's ability to maintain balance.

When we consider these factors together, we often gain a more complete understanding of what's happening beneath the surface.

Why Symptoms Matter

One of the things I value most during a consultation is listening.

Your body tells a story.

How you're sleeping.

How your digestion feels.

Your energy throughout the day.

Changes in mood.

Skin health.

Stress levels.

Hormonal shifts.

These experiences matter.

While laboratory information provides one piece of the picture, your lived experience provides another.

Bringing those pieces together often allows us to have more meaningful conversations about supporting your overall wellness.

Functional Wellness Is About Understanding

I often remind my clients that functional wellness isn't about chasing perfect numbers.

It's about understanding how your body is functioning today and identifying opportunities to better support it.

That may include conversations about:

  • Nutrition

  • Sleep habits

  • Stress management

  • Hydration

  • Physical activity

  • Environmental exposures

  • Daily wellness routines

Small changes, practiced consistently, often create meaningful progress over time.

Every Person Is Unique

No two wellness journeys look exactly alike.

What supports one person may not be appropriate for someone else.

That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all wellness plans.

Functional bloodwork is simply one tool that helps me better understand your unique story so we can create a wellness approach that feels thoughtful, realistic, and personalized to your needs.

Education Comes Before Action

One of my core beliefs is that education empowers better decisions.

The more you understand how your body works, the more confidently you can make choices that support your long-term wellbeing.

My role isn't to overwhelm you with information.

It's to help you better understand your body so you can move forward with clarity rather than confusion.

My Approach at Wholehearted Health & Wellness

Everything I do begins with listening.

I believe your symptoms deserve to be heard.

Your questions deserve thoughtful answers.

And your wellness journey deserves compassion.

Functional bloodwork is one of the many tools I use to help build a broader understanding of your health while supporting a whole-person approach to wellness.

My hope is that every conversation leaves you feeling more informed, more encouraged, and more confident about your next steps.
